Whether you've just started or have been on the court for years, in this article, we'll explain how to easily determine your padel level. This way, you'll know your padel level in no time.
Why do you need to determine your padel level?
Finding out your padel level is more than just sticking a ‘label’ on your game. It genuinely helps you progress. This is because:
Correct opponents: It's simply more fun and exciting when you're playing against someone who's about as good as you are. That way, it remains a fair fight.
Training to get slimmer If you know what you're already good at and what you need to work on, you can train much more purposefully. You won't waste time on things you've already mastered.
Faster progress You'll see progress faster if you set goals that match your padel level. This way, you'll stay motivated and notice that you're constantly improving.

Er zijn vijf niveaus in padel: Beginners, Gevorderden, Semi-gevorderden, Gevorderden en Professioneel.
Padel levels are often categorised into four tiers: beginner, intermediate, advanced, and professional. Each level has its own characteristics and tips for improvement. Below, we briefly explain each level with concrete examples.
- Padel level – Beginner
When you're just starting out with padel, your padel level is ‘Beginner’. This is where everyone begins, whether you have experience with other racket sports or not. Everything is new and you still need to learn the rules and basic skills.
Features:
- You are just learning the rules of the game and basic techniques such as forehand and backhand.
- It's still a challenge to place the ball correctly and the walls or fences to be used.
- If you participate in official tournaments, you probably have a KNLTB playing strength of 8 or 9.
For example: You often hit the ball too hard or too soft. If the ball bounces back off the wall, you're not quick enough to react. This is typically something you need to work on at this stage. Discover the rules of padel here.
Tips Focus on the basics. Practice simple strokes and make sure you keep the ball in play regularly. Also, work on your court positioning. Always try to be in a place where you can react quickly.
- Padel level – Advanced
You already have some experience and are starting to get a better handle on the strokes and movements. You play rallies and can already place the ball a bit better. The basics are there, but you still lack some consistency, this is the Advanced Padel level.
Features:
- You can return the ball well, but sometimes you are still too late for difficult shots.
- You are aware of the tactics, but don't always execute them perfectly yet.
- You most likely have a KNLTB playing strength of 6 or 7.
For example: You can play a rally, but if the ball bounces off the wall, you sometimes react just a bit too slowly. You also often know where you need to be on the court, but you sometimes end up in the wrong position.
Tips Focus on your successes. Try to bring more variety to your game, such as lobs or drop shots. Also, work on your teamwork with your partner. Good communication makes a big difference at this padel level.
- Padel level – Expert
If you've really played a lot and win matches, your padel level is likely Expert. Your game is now more strategic, and you're starting to think like an experienced player.
Features
- You play regularly and have good control of the ball.
- You consciously exploit your opponents' weaknesses and anticipate their moves well.
- Your KNLTB playing strength is between 4 and 5.
Translation: You pick your moments to attack or defend cleverly. If your opponent hits a poor lob, you go straight for a smash.
Tips Work on the details. How can you make your strokes even sharper? Also pay attention to your fitness, because faster feet and better stamina make a big difference at this level of padel.
- Padel level – Professional
This is the highest padel level. You play at a national or even international level. You are in peak physical and mental condition. Everything here revolves around skill and perfect shots. Read more about the different padel strokes here. If you're playing at this padel level, you're looking for serious competition and want to win tournaments.
Features
- You not only have all the techniques mastered, but you also play strategically at the highest level.
- You read your opponents' game flawlessly and constantly adapt your strategy.
- Your playing strength is between 1 and 3.
Example: You play in tournaments and opponents see you as the ultimate challenge. You are so confident that you immediately spot your opponent's weakness. You also know precisely how to exploit it. Whether it's a deep smash or a soft lob, you always play with a plan.
Tips At this padel level, it's especially important to keep challenging yourself. Play against even stronger opponents and analyse your matches to see where you can still improve.
How do you determine your own padel level?
There are several ways to determine your level. Below are the main ways:
Self-assessment Honestly assess your own game. How good are you at the strokes, positioning on the court, and teamwork with your partner? Be critical, but realistic.
Ask a trainer: An experienced padel coach from Padel Mate Club can help you to objectively assess your level. They will look at your technique, tactics, and physical condition. At Padel Mate Club, it is possible to register for Leveling Evaluations. Here, you will play with three other players against one of our coaches. After the Evaluation has ended, they will assess whether your level matches what is stated on your account. From there, we can adjust your level.
Enter tournaments By playing matches against different opponents, you get a good idea of where you stand. Tournaments are also a perfect place to get feedback from other players or coaches. Check out our weekly events and tournaments here.

What is the KNLTB playing strength?
Of KNLTB The Royal Dutch Lawn Tennis Association organises official padel matches and assigns players based on their Playing strength. When you first start official matches, you begin with a playing strength of 9. As you win more matches, your playing strength decreases. This ensures that you are always playing against opponents of your level.
Playing strength vs. Rating:
Playing strength This is a rating from 1 (professional) to 9 (beginner) and indicates your level of play in tournaments.
Rating: Your rating is a more precise number with decimal places. This changes after every match, depending on whether you win or lose.
So, imagine you're playing against someone with a lower rating. If you win, your rating only goes up a little bit because you were expected to win. But if you lose to someone with a higher rating, your rating only drops a tiny bit. This system ensures you're always playing at a fair level.
Do you need to participate in KNLTB tournaments to determine your padel level?
No, that's not necessary. You can also gauge your level based on your own play and the feedback from your coach or fellow players. But if you really want an accurate measurement, participating in official tournaments is the best option.
